Annual variations in suspended particulate matter within the Dover Strait ArchiMer
Dupont, Jp; Collins, Mb; Lafite, R; Nash, L; Huault, Mf; Shimwell, Sj; Chaddock, S; Brunet, C; Wartel, M; Lamboy, M.
During a survey at six stations in the Dover Strait, from July 1990 to November 1991, water samples were collected to measure : suspended sediment load and its organic content; particle characteristics; photosynthesis pigments; and heavy metals. In this contribution, particle measurements are interpreted in terms of hydrodynamical effects and seasonal evolution. Multi-modal grain size spectra are indicative of depth and cross-sectional variations, from die coastline to the central waters. Tidal variations, biological productivity and wind effects can be identified. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) components (determined using SEM, when combined with size spectra) illustrate hydrodynamical, geomorphological and biological effects on the composition of the...

Distribution spatio-temporelle des éléments Fe, Al, Mn, Ca, Mg, Ti et V particulaires dans le détroit du Pas-de-Calais ArchiMer
Douez, C; Statham, P; Auger, Y; Choisy, P; Deram, L; Dupont, Jp; Fischer, Jc; Puskaric, E; Wartel, M.
Within the framework of the European Fluxmanche programme, 92 samplings of suspended particulate matter were collected during eight cruises through the Dover Strait. The mean concentrations obtained for Al (44.3 mg/g), Fe (27.4 mg/g) and Ca (110 mg/g) are comparable to those obtained by Nolting and Eisma in January 1980. However, the concentrations of Mn (0.585 mg/g) Ti (3.14 mg/g) and V (0.225 mg/g) are twice as large. An important gradient of concentration is observed between the coastal and offshore waters, reflecting coastal erosion and human activities. Detailed examination of the contents of the major elements indicates that these remain practically constant in the particulate matter during a tidal cycle. On the other hand, the concentrations of...

Évaluation statistique de la répartition des métaux en traces Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn et Mn dans le Seine et son estuaire ArchiMer
Ouddane, B; Fischer, Jc; Wartel, M.
Manganese, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead concentrations were determined in particulate and dissolved phases in the Seine river and its estuary. This site is characterized by macrotidal system, large-scale chemical industrial activities causing contamination of the river system, and by a turbidity maximum in the estuary. Statistical treatment involving principal component analysis of data has shown a marked difference in the behaviour of each metal in solution and suspended material. This phenomenon is related to variations in granulometric profiles, salinity, concentration of different ligands, and amounts of suspended material.... In solution, the behaviour of cadmium and lead is partly related to the gradient of salinity, while that of copper strongly...

Evolution de la complexation des metaux (Ca, Mg, Cd, Pb et Cu) dans l''estuaire de la Seine ArchiMer
Fischer, J; Wartel, M.
Interaction between metallic ions and dissolved organic matter can take major part in the biogeochemical cycle of metals in the aquatic environment. The authors point out copper behavior by the study of complexing capacity of surface and bottom waters. A systematic analysis of major elements in natural waters has allowed for a proposal of geographical distribution of metals.

Fluxes of Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn through the strait of dover into the southern north-sea ArchiMer
Statham, Pj; Auger, Y; Burton, Jd; Choisy, P; Fischer, Jc; James, Rh; Morley, Nh; Ouddane, B; Puskaric, E; Wartel, M.
Measurements of dissolved and particulate Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn have been made on a regular basis over a fifteen month period at stations across the Strait of Dover, as a part of the Fluxmanche programme. These measurements have been integrated with data on fluxes of water and suspended particulate matter also obtained within the Fluxmanche programme to provide estimates of fluxes of these elements into the southern North Sea. For Fe, Mn, and Pb, particulate fluxes are greater than dissolved fluxes, whilst the reverse is true for Cd, Cu and Ni. Significant daily changes in magnitude of the modelled fluxes of water through the Strait when combined with averaged metal concentrations over longer timescales, result in large changes of fluxes of...

Mineral and organic soluble forms of zinc, iron and copper: Distribution in the Seine Estuary. ArchiMer
Gandon, R; Guegueniat, P; Fischer, J; Wartel, M.
One characteristic of the Seine Estuary system is the process of sediment resuspension by the specific hydrodynamics of this environment. It's the main factor of trace metals transport. Autotrophic activities also have an effect on the estuary, by pH variation. The behavior of soluble and organic copper, iron, have been studied in relation to salinity in and out of the estuary. The results are compared with those of other estuaries.

Pouvoir complexant des eaux de l'estuaire de la Seine ArchiMer
Fischer, J; Wartel, M; Guegueniat, P; Gandon, R.
Copper has been studied, by the authors, owing to its ability to complex with various organic ligands of natural waters. Metals extraction and liberation can be explained, in part, by this complexing capacity.
